MASTER'S IN TRANSLATION AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES
Program Outline
The 15th edition of the Master's in Translation and New Technologies is a program from Universidad a distancia de Madrid (UDIMA) organized by the Instituto Superior de Estudios Lingüísticos y Traducción - ISTRAD.
The object of the master’s is to specialize students in the field of Translation and New Technologies and, more specifically, in the localization modality, according to the demand of the current professional and corporate world and the labor market. In order to achieve this, university professors as well as professionals from the localization industry with enterprise and leadership experience, will play a fundamental role in the students’ specialization by providing them direct guidance through academic sessions as well as the use of updated tools and materials that meet the demands of today’s labor market. In this way, ISTRAD seeks to provide students with the necessary skills to develop in the field of Translation and New Technologies, offer them a network of interpersonal and material support that we have built over the years and, ultimately, accompany them in their professional development within the sector.
- 1. To offer university graduates detailed and specific training in translation techniques applied to localization related to the translation process itself and using the most important software.
- 2. To offer university graduates detailed and specific training in translation techniques and tools applied to the localization of web content, software, video games and mobile applications.

The following are the specific objectives of the 15th edition of Master's in Translation and New Technologies:
The master's is essentially of a practical nature and carries a course load of 60 ECTS credits, with each credit being equivalent of 25 teaching hours.
- Source language: English, French, German, Spanish or Italian.
- Target language: English, French, German, Spanish or Italian.
The 15th Master's in Translation and New Technologies allows students to freely choose their desired language combination from the following options:
Of these languages, applicants can choose the pair they wish to work with and will be given a specific study program for the desired combination. We always recommend applicants have a high level of knowledge in the source language and culture and a complete mastery of the target language and culture. For this reason, it is ideal for applicants to choose their native language as their desired target language. If your native language is not included in this list, we recommend choosing the language you best express yourself in as your target language.
The recommended language level is the equivalent of a B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CER) in the source language (English, French, German, Spanish or Italian) and the equivalent of a C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in the target language (English, French, German, Spanish or Italian) for those students who translate to a language other than their native language.
Once the program has begun, students will have the option to add a second or third language combination which can be chosen from the languages listed above
With regard for the language for the materials for the program, in the Online modality, students can freely choose between Spanish and English, which will preferably be the native language. In the Onsite Modality as well as the webinars held by professors, however, sessions will primarily be held in Spanish.
To complete the 15th Master's in Translation and New Technologies students must have access to a computer (with the Windows operating system, since that is the system compatible with the software that will be used throughout the master's), as well as a secure and stable Internet connection.
Studies will take place during the 2024-2025 academic year. Classes for the onsite modality will take place from October 2024 to May 2025. Those who need more than the two planned semesters to complete their studies can find more information in point 19.

There will be three periods to complete registration:
1st registration period: April 15 to May 10, 2024
2nd registration period: June 15 to July 10, 2024
3rd registration period: September 1 to September 30, 2024
Those interested in the course can submit their registration form during any of the registration periods. Registration can be done via registration or directly at the offices of the Instituto Superior de Estudios Lingüísticos y Traducción - ISTRAD (Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 2 pm and from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, and Friday between 9 am and 1:30 pm). Students who register during the first enrollment period will be given preference when assigning spots for the onsite modality as explained in point 6 of this program outline. Once the registration period is over, the students selected for the course will be notified via email and the necessary documentation for enrollment will be sent, either via email or the postal service as per the student's preference.
- To complete the registration progress during the established period and to be accepted into the course, in accordance with the previous point.
- To have a university degree, taking into account the two following notes: a) students who are still not in possession of a university degree ta the time of enrollment will have until 15 November 2024 to present their degree, and b) applicants with a-non-Spanish university degree can complete the master's without the need to equate their studies to a Spanish degree or translate their documentation.

In order to complete the enrollment process for the 15th edition of the Master's in Translation and New Technologies, it is necessary:

Once students have been accepted and have enrolled in the course, they will receive an email with information regarding the academic advisors assigned ot each module (belonging to the professional or academic sector of localization) who they can turn to for any question or problem related to their studies.
Additionally, both the academic coordinator and supporting academic staff will be available ta ISTRAD for any consult (online, by phone or email) related to their professional work in translation or for anything related to their work outside of the master's program. Holiday periods 2024-2025:
Academic activity for the master's for both the onsite and online modalities will begin on 9 October 2024.
There will be a course presentation on 4 October and, notwithstanding the possibility of holding it in person, it will be streamed on our social media.
The modules along with the faculty in collaboration with the 15th Master's in Translation and New Technologies will consist of the following subjects:
The internship coordinator will contact students in order to explain the process of the master's final phase and choose from the two options offered during October 2024. The final phase, which is worth a total of 20 ECTS credits, will consist of two modules:
Students will receive an international student ID card issued by ISTRAD-ISIC at no additional cost. This card will be valid from 1 October 2024 through 30 September 2025. You can consult the characteristics and advantages of this student ID here. Throughout the month of October, instructions will be sent out on how to obtain this card, which will be managed by ISTRAD.
Upon completing the program, the Academic Committee for the master's will award the following personalized documents:
1. Diploma for the Master's in Translation and New Technologies awarded by the Universidad a Distancia de Madrid (UDIMA). The reverse side gives detailed information regarding the various modules studied. This Lifelong Learning Master's Diploma is not part of an officially recognized degree program in accordance with art 4.4 del Decreto 84/2004 del 13/Mayo de la CAM (Art. 4.4 of Decree 84/2004 of May 13 of the Community of Madrid).
2. Certificate of completion of the Master's in Translation and New Technologies awarded by ISTRAD. The reverse side gives detailed information regarding the various modules studied.
3. Certificate and detailed report of the student's performance in each of the modules studied. These certificates list the language combinations in which the modules were completed.
4. If completed, a detailed report reflecting the activities completed and performance review during the internship, along with the corresponding accrediting certificate for the activity.
The protocol to issue this final documentation will begin once the final corrected assignment is received. Within 15 days, students will be contacted by ISTRAD administration to begin the process.

If a banking or administrative error occurs when making a payment, either the initial payment or any of the following installments, students may request a refund at any time within the ten days following making the payment. The payment will be refunded without the need for any additional paperwork.
In the case of withdrawals, students can request the amount paid be applied to the next edition of the program in which they are enrolled or any other course offered by ISTRAD up to a month after making the payment and completing enrollment. This payment will be applied as the final installment in the new program the student is going to complete.
Those students who for work, professional or personal reasons require more than the planned two semesters to finish their studies will need to re-enroll and pay a fee corresponding to the remaining credits to complete the course as well as the virtual campus and administrative fees.
After the course begins, students will receive an email with information about the credit transfer and simultaneity options available for the studies offered by ISTRAD. If you are interested in receiving credit for previous studies completed at ISTRAD, you can consult this information.

- Preparatory course for the exam directed toward obtaining the title of Sworn Translator-Interpreter issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MOFAC) of the Government of Spain.
- Preparatory courses for the Lawyer-Linguist of the European Union exams: candidates with Spanish as L1.
- Preparatory course for the United Nations Translator exams: candidates with Spanish as their mother tongue.
- Work as a freelancer: This workshop will explore the keys to getting started in the labor market as a professional translation freelancer. The professors running this workshop will discuss financial topics, advice about finding clients and setting prices based on their own personal experience.
- Image and personal brand: Students will explore the importance of having an image and a personal brand, as well as the options we have available to create one, to be able to offer clients our services in a more consistent and consolidated way.
- Managing profiles and social media: In this final workshop, students will learn how to manage their profiles and use social media as a marketing tool to look for potential clients.
During their studies, enrolled students will have the opportunity to participate in a series of additional training courses that do not count towards the credits of the master’s degree. The additional training courses are voluntary and optional and at no additional cost. The training courses are divided into four main fields of study:
21.1. ORTHOTYPOGRAPHY AND LANGUAGE CORRECTION
The first additional training course offered by ISTRAD consists of the following:
This voluntary and optional additional training will be carried out remotely and will be included on the master‘s activities calendar.
21.2. PREPARATORY COURSES FOR PUBLIC EXAMINATIONS
During the course of studies, the students enrolled who have formalized their application to the corresponding organization will be offered the possibility of taking one (1) of the online courses offered by ISTRAD to prepare for public examinations. Each option has different access and language combination requirements:
This course will be carried out remotely and the student will have the duration of one calendar year to complete the course. The calendar year will begin starting on the date the first lesson is made available. If the student needs more than the allotted time to complete the course, an extension of six months may be requested upon the presentation of corresponding justification for not having completed the course, which then will be evaluated by the Academic Committee.
21.3. EMPLOYABILITY SESSIONS
In the course, employability sessions led by business professionals and freelance translators will be organized. The speakers will share their knowledge about job placement as well as offer valuable insight and practical advice based on their own experiences, guiding our students toward a successful future in the world of translation.
These sessions will be held in person in Seville exclusively for students in any of our postgraduate studies at ISTRAD, no matter their modality. These sessions will also be offered virtually for those who prefer to attend them remotely.
21.4. ENTREPRENEURSHIP WORKSHOPS
A day of workshops on labor orientation and entrepreneurship will be organized. Interactive and practical sessions will be held, providing our students with concrete tools to face the challenges of the labor market. The participants will delve into activities, exercises and specific tips that will strengthen their abilities and allow them to confidently approach their transition to the professional environment.
The content of the workshops will be the following:
Similarly to the employability sessions, these workshops will be held in person in Seville exclusively for students in any of our postgraduate studies at ISTRAD, no matter their modality. These workshops will also be offered virtually for those who prefer to attend them remotely.
Finally, we will cap this academic period with a Closing Ceremony, in which we will say goodbye to the students with a closing lecture led by a guest speaker in the world of translation, followed by celebratory hors d’oeuvres and a cocktail hour.
The sudents will be offered the possibility to participate in these end-of-the-year events (either in all three or any of their choosing) a few months ahead of time so that they can make any necessary travel plans. The participation of experts from all fields of translation in these events ensures an enriching and motivative experience for students, ofering them a clear and realistic view of the job market.

Onsite Learning Modality

The work dynamic corresponding to the Onsite Learning modality will be based on the administration uploading the material corresponding to each module on the virtual studies platform following a work schedule. Materials will be sent in text format, depending on the nature of the document (normally editable .doc or .pdf files), and said packs of materials will include the following documents:
• Theory: theorical background for each module being studied.
Presentation of content
Analysis of the protocols
Description and presentation of the corresponding software that will be used in the localization in one or several tutorials
• Practice: translation task or corresponding exercises.
• Circular Letter: Information about the files included in a given pack of materials, and instructions to work on and submit the different exercises and projects.
Classes will be taught in Spanish. However, content review sessions will be held in the two working languages: English and Spanish. A laptop will be needed to work the contents in onsite classes.
All of the theoretical documents and materials for each subject will be written in the student’s chosen working language (Spanish or English), and the instructions and files for exercises and projects will refer to the specific language pair chosen by the student.
The 2024-2025 academic year will have an onsite modality with classes being held at Instituto Superior de Estudios Lingüísticos y Traducción headquarters in Seville. The onsite sessions (held in Spanish) will be held on two weekdays, and students will receive a definitive schedule before classes begin.
This modality will have a quota of between 25 and 50 students. If the minimum number of applications is not reached (25 applicants) during the first enrollment period between 15 April and 10 May, only the online modality will take place; and if the number of applicants exceeds the maximum number of places offered (50 applicants), applicants will take an entrance exam consisting of a translation, language, reading comprehension and written test.
Students who choose this modality must have schedule availability to participate in all sessions as attendance will be mandatory. If students cannot attend regularly, they will always have the option of switching to Distance Modality.
Access to the materials and tasks to be evaluated will be the exact same for students in the Onsite and Distance learning modalities, as explained in the Program Outline, so onsite students will also have access to webinars, group consult sessions and all the recordings stored in the ISTRAD virtual studies platform.

The course presentation will be held on Friday, 4 October 2024 and will be streamed via our social media profiles for those who cannot attend in person.

In addition, throughout the master’s, there will be some webinars that students can join live. The majority of these webinars will correspond to some of the scheduled sessions for the Onsite Modality, so they will primarily be offered in Spanish. However, content review sessions (group consult sessions) and individual tutoring sessions will be held in Spanish and English.
Recordings of these webinars will be available on the ISTRAD virtual platform for all students after they are held.
The webinar schedule will also be sent to students at the start of the course and will be available in the studies platform.

Internship
All enrolled students who submit the necessary documentation (particularly academic qualifications) and meet the established requirements.
1. Be up to date in all subjects when starting the internship period. The reason for this requirement is that, in terms of the student's education and to get the most out of the experience, they should have completed a series of modules before beginning their internship.
2. Have maintained a minimum average grade of 7 (Notable) at the time of starting the internship.
3. Have full schedule availability during the months in which the onsite internship or collaboration with the company may take place. Additionally, students must be available to be at the company following the proposed schedule, whether that be full time or part time.
The internship coordinator will send forms to choose your internship option between October and December of the first year of studies (full time) or the second year of studies (part time).
The final report from your supervisor at the company and the information obtained during your internship period will be taken into consideration.
The internship coordinator sends company internship offers by email or via the Facebook group.
- Name of the company or entity where the internship will be completed, information about the company and links to its website and social media.
- Center, location or address where the internship will take place.
- Internship start and end date as well as the length in hours.
- Number of hours per day and assigned schedule.
- Training plan with the activities and skills to develop.
Internship offers emailed individually to students include the following information to the extent possible:
Internships are assigned based on the student's CV, whether they fit the required profile for the internship offer, their interest and preferences expressed on the internship questionnaire requested for this purpose.
In some cases, students must complete a selection process (interview, translation test, etc.) and the decision whether or not to accept student candidates will depend on the institution. When a company or institution contacts a student to participate in a selection process, he or she must always respond, unless they have already been definitively assigned somewhere else.
Students may receive credit for work or an internship in translation completed previously by submitting an accrediting certificate for the experience. This document must be signed and stamped by the company. Additionally, it must indicate the approximate number of hours completed, the start and end date of the internship or work and a brief description of the tasks completed. If it is freelance work, the internship coordinator will tell the student how to proceed.
Students can contact companies or institutions they are interested in directly to arrange their own internship. The process is as follows: the student should notify the internship coordinator to avoid overlapping arrangements and, once the company has agreed to offer them an internship, they should simply contact the internship coordinator to continue administrative arrangements.
Curricular internships, which follow a part-time working schedule, typically last for three months, with the possibility of an extension of 6 additional months as an extracurricular internship if both parties are interested and agree.
During the internship, all students will have accident insurance arranged by ISTRAD to cover any possible incident during the internship.
Given the educational nature of the internship, its completion in no case entails the obligations of an employee. In accordance with the signed agreement, the student and company will not have a work relationship. As a result, the student will not necessarily receive payment for their training activity or the results that may arise from it.
However, some companies do provide students economic aid for moving and transportation expenses.
Internships can be completed in Spain or the student\'s home country or country of residence. If they wish to complete their internship in a country in which they do not reside, they must be fully willing to travel as well as cover the cost of their stay where the company is located, according to the destination they have chosen. Unless the student already resides there, ISTRAD will not arrange internships in countries with travel advisories issued by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
Indeed, internships take place onsite. However, some companies take on student interns for online work. In this case, it must be with an institution we have previously collaborated with to ensure that the internship meets our quality standards and that the institution is willing to prepare a training plan, create a deadline schedule and supervise, guide and correct the student's work.
Additionally, although students don't always have a set schedule during an online internship and can combine it with their daily activities, they must be available a minimum number of hours per day to complete the internship since they will be doing real work and the company will give them set deadlines.
